More than 7,000 pubs are facing closure within the next year, according to a shocking poll. The survey reveals that four out of five pubs have experienced a decline in profits due to dwindling customer numbers, while 97 per cent are grappling with increased bills. Consequently, 16 per cent of pubs, totalling 7,248 establishments out of the UK’s 45,300, are likely to shut down in the coming 12 months. This alarming prediction is expected to intensify pressure on Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to reduce alcohol duty in the upcoming Budget. However, this demand for tax cuts follows a significant reduction in the Treasury’s headroom for such measures, highlighting the challenges policymakers face in addressing the crisis.
