A study by the National Cancer Institute in the US suggests older adults who consume large amounts of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are about 10% more likely to die early compared to those who eat less. The study, which analysed data from over 540,000 people aged 50-71 from the mid-1990s, found a modest increase in deaths from heart disease and diabetes, but no link to cancer-related deaths. Professor Rosie Green noted the study’s observational nature and potential changes in dietary habits over time.
