Medics have warned that NHS waiting list numbers in England could potentially reach 9 million people in the next two years due to a lack of funding in the Autumn Statement. The statement did not include any new funding promises for healthcare, and settlements for 2024-25 remained frozen in cash terms. The Chancellor also confirmed a long-term cash freeze in investment spending. While there was a commitment of £200 million to “boost NHS resilience” and create more medical places starting in September next year, it may not be sufficient to address the growing waiting list crisis.
