Discount supermarket chains Lidl and Aldi experienced record salesin the UK during the 2023 Christmas lead-up. In the four weeks to Christmas, Lidl reported year-on-year sales growth of 12%, while Aldi’s sales rose by 8%. The former said it saw 4.5 million more shoppers come through its doors, with Friday 22 December being the busiest day of trading on record for both companies. While each supermarket has benefited from customers trading down during the cost of living crisis, retail research director Patrick O’Brien said: “the numbers are also not surprising given the number of new store openings.”
