Wind farms paid £275m to keep turbines turned OFF

Scotland’s wind farms were paid a record £275million last year to produce no energy under a system that has been branded a ‘national scandal’. ‘Constraint payments’ are made when turbines are forced to stand idle because the electricity cannot be used or the wind is too strong. Last year the amount paid out to Scottish wind farms in constraint payments made up nearly 90 per cent of the UK total of £307.2million.
