Shop workers are encountering a surge of 1,300 incidents of violence and abuse daily, coupled with a battle against brazen acts of shoplifting, prompting calls for government protection. Incidents of racial abuse, sexual harassment, physical assaults, and threats with weapons rose by 50 per cent last year, while thefts more than doubled to 16.7 million incidents, reports the British Retail Consortium. This increase in retail crime aligns with a period of notable price inflation, putting pressure on families. Some experts attribute the rise to labour cost-cutting measures like self-checkouts, while retailers point to other factors.
