British Gas has filed a record number of winding-up petitions against small businesses, threatening to tip restaurants and care homes into bankruptcy. Centrica, which owns British Gas, recorded an 82pc increase in bad debts – money owed by customers that is unlikely to be recovered – reaching £541m last year compared with 2022. The amount of bad debt owed by small businesses increased by £86m during the year, Centrica said.
