Obese public puts strain on NHS finances

Health Secretary Proposes Weight Loss Jabs to Aid Employment

UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting has suggested offering weight loss injections to unemployed individuals, with the goal of helping them return to the workforce by improving their health.

New weight loss jabs could be given to unemployed people to help them get back into work, Sir Keir Starmer has said.

The Prime Minister said that the drugs would be “very important” for reducing obesity rates and helping to reduce the burden on the NHS.

It came as the Government announced a £279 million investment from Lilly – the world’s largest pharmaceutical company – on the day the Prime Minister hosted an international investment summit.

Ministers say the latest generation of weight loss medicine, like Mounjaro, could be administered to people in order to get them back into employment, and to ease costs to the health service.
