French train conductors get 10pc of any fines they hand out
French rail conductors are under fire for reportedly obtaining a 10 percent commission from any fines they issue, leading to concerns about unjust penalties. As per an internal document from the SNCF, France’s national rail operator, ticket inspectors are eligible for a substantial commission on immediate, on-site fines. Complaints of unfair treatment have surged due to this policy. SNCF Voyageurs maintains it’s a strategy to boost fine payment rates and combat fraud, costing an estimated €200m (£170m) annually.
