Police officers are bracing for further unrest – with reports suggesting at least 30 protests could be planned for today, police sources say. However, they believe the situation is “manageable”. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has promised communities they will be kept safe, after he chaired another emergency Cobra meeting last night. Disorder erupted in cities across the UK last week after the fatal stabbing of three girls in Southport – with unrest fuelled by misinformation online that the suspect was an asylum seeker. So far, more than 400 arrests have been made and around 100 people have been charged in connection with the disorder. More are due in court later, after the first person was jailed over the clashes on Tuesday, and upwards of 500 extra prison places are being made available in light of the increased pressure on the criminal justice system. Later this morning, inquests are set to be formally opened into the deaths of the three girls killed in Southport.
