Compensation payouts to drivers for pothole-related damage have decreased by over 50 per cent from £3.7 million to £1.7 million between 2019 and 2023, according to latest figures. Motorists are now having to turn to their insurers to cover the costs of damage caused by potholes, which has contributed to rising car insurance premiums. The average cost of car insurance has reached a record £627, and pothole damage is often cited as a factor driving up premiums.
