The nineties rocked!
CARGO PANTS, FLIP PHONES, BRIDGET JONES, THE OFFICE, UGGS AND HOOP EARRINGS – GEN Z BRITS INSIST THE NOUGHTIES WAS THE BEST DECADE FOR POPULAR CULTURE, ACCORDING TO NEW RESEARCH
Nine in ten (90 percent) of young Brits say the 2000s have come back into fashion, with almost a quarter (22 percent) believing the noughties would have been THE most exciting decade to grow up, according to new research.
The launch of YouTube in 2005 was voted the coolest thing about the decade (31 percent), while youngsters also thank the noughties for Harry Potter (16 percent), Big Brother (12 percent), Timberland boots (11 percent), iPods (31 percent), flip-phones (24 percent) and Pokémon (18 percent)
In fact, one in four (23 percent) Gen Z Brits, polled by Magners, would love to transport back to the 2000s if they could, while 18 percent say that the decade makes them feel nostalgic, despite being too young to remember it.
Seven percent also admit they are embracing the pub drink of the noughties, cider and blackcurrant, so much so that 16 percent say that cider is their go-to drink.
Other foods that are giving Gen Z a nostalgic boost include Freddos (31 percent) and Capri-Sun (29 percent).
“This research shows how much the nation loves the 2000s,” says Iain Telford, Brand Lead at Magners Irish Cider, who commissioned the research. “Twenty years ago, Magners brought cider over ice to the world and was a staple of good times and unforgettable moments. Today we’re celebrating the nostalgia of the 2000s that still resonates with so many.
“As younger Brits are embracing everything from bandanas and crimped hair to pop-punk and waistcoats, here’s to reliving the spirit of the 2000s and making new memories with the cider that made them even better the first-time round.”
Half (50 percent) of the older Brits surveyed believe that youngsters are trying to emulate the style of the decade with graphic t-shirts (20 percent), Ugg boots (20 percent), skinny jeans (19 percent), cropped tops and t-shirts (16 percent) and large hoop earrings (15 percent) all being showcased on the current high street.
88 percent of Gen Z believe that noughties TV shows are helping to bring the decade back into fashion with Gossip Girl (26 percent), Gavin and Stacey (25 percent), Doctor Who (23 percent) and The Office (19 percent) among the most popular.
Gilmore Girls (19 percent), Big Brother (18 percent), Breaking Bad (18 percent) and How I Met Your Mother (18 percent) are also considered class 2000s entertainment.
Pop-punk (11 percent) is seen as a noughties comeback with artists like Avril Lavigne (23 percent), Green Day (17 percent) and Linkin Park (11 percent) now being channelled into artists such as Machine Gun Kelly.
Beyonce (27 percent) and Rihanna (26 percent) are seen as the biggest icons of the noughties, along with Miley Cyrus (26 percent) and Britney Spears (25 percent). Eminem (23 percent), Paris Hilton (23 percent), Jennifer Aniston (21 percent) and David Beckham (20 percent) are also viewed as icons.
