Rail fares in England will be frozen for the first time in 30 years, as announced by the Chancellor in the Autumn Budget. This measure is expected to save passengers £600 million in 2026/27.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander criticised the previous Conservative government for prioritising profits over public service. She highlighted that fares increased by 60% under the Tories. The freeze is part of Labour’s broader cost-of-living strategy, which also includes freezing NHS prescription charges. The Rail Delivery Group welcomed the decision, stating it benefits customers.
