Trees’ cooling effect ‘saving hundreds of lives in cities’. University College London has found that trees in urban environments have saved over 150 lives in London in the past eight years by lowering temperatures by up to 2°C. The tree’s cooling process — by reflecting sunlight and evaporating water — reduces deaths from heat-related illnesses. While the study did not estimate the number of lives saved outside London, it suggests similar effects are occurring nationally.”
